It takes about six months after stopping the use of hormonal contraceptives for a woman's body to heal, that is regulate its self according to its own hormones not the artificial hormones used for contraception. The length of time it takes for a woman’s body to return to healthy ovulatory cycles after discontinuing hormonal contraceptives depends on five factors: 1) the type of hormonal contraceptive used, 2) the length of time the hormonal contraceptive was used, 3) the age she was when she first started using hormonal contraceptives 3) how healthy her menstrual cycles were before starting to use hormonal contraceptives, and 4) her basic health and nutritional status. During the transitional time after stopping hormonal contraceptives a woman may experience any of the following reproductive situations:

  • anovulatory cycles (not ovulating)
  • continuous discharge
  • spotting (continuous or intermittent)
  • variable return of peak mucus
  • shortened pre and post-ovulatory phases
  • early ovulation

These situations are reflective of the ways hormonal contraception interferes with normal reproductive physiology. The recovery period from such contraception is variable, ranging from three to thirty-six months depending on the five factors discussed above. Over time the body attempts to readjust itself to healthy reproductive function, its physiologically ideal. As the woman's body begins to exert itself according to the hormonal rhythms she is designed for biologically, her cycles will reflect healthier patterns.
